The Burberry check began as a lining, printed inside trench coats in the 1920s, and only later moved to the outside of the garment. That history is why it still reads as a lining pattern: it looks best used as a facing, a hood lining or a panel rather than covering a whole coat, and the house's own designs mostly still treat it that way.
